April is the beginning of the UMSC Spring Soccer season and Travel Soccer tryouts. Here are a few updates on things that are on the horizon for this month:

Spring Soccer

Sunday April 1st is Opening Day
If you have registered and are not contacted by a coach by Monday, March 26th please contact Chris Cattie at chris.cattie@umsconline.org
Games are Sunday Afternoons with 1pm, 2pm or 3pm start times.
All Games are held at the Middle School Fields

**Note that there will be no Snack Stand for the Spring League games

Travel Soccer Tryouts

Tryouts Dates are Sunday April 1, 15 and 22 (29th is a rain date)
Tryout times will be posted and communicated shortly
All children that are registered (even for the Intramural League) are encouraged to try out for their respective age groups.
You must attend at least two try out sessions to be considered for a Travel Team
You must be registered in order to try out. If you are not registered you can click here to register online.

2012 UMSC Intermural U18 Soccer

Dear Parents,

We hope your child enjoyed playing in the Upper Moreland Soccer Club’s 2011 program. Registration for next year’s program will be held in February and March. For your convenience, we suggest you take advantage of the Club’s online registration system. Please visit www.umsconline.org for details for both online and walk-in registration.

It is very important that you register your child on time so we can make the necessary decisions regarding the number of teams and age groups of all the divisions. Our decision on how the leagues will be formed will be predicated on the results of our March 2012 registration.

Historically, we have placed all 15, 16 & 17 year old boys on one U18 Intermural Squad and sent them out to play local clubs. This league developed out of necessity since many area soccer clubs notice a significant decline of older teenagers registering for recreational soccer. An in-house program requires at least 64 players. Typically, we only have 20 or so players who are age 15 or above. Rather than tell the teens that there is nowhere to play, we have provided this option with much success in the past.

The players on the U18 Intermural Squad have enjoyed this outside competition and the ability to have fun while getting exercise and playing at a recreational level.

Girls who are age 15, 16 & 17 may also elect to play on this team. It should be noted that the team plays in a boy’s league, but co-ed teams are allowed. If any 15, 16 or 17 year old girl is not interested in playing in the U18 Boys Intermural league, then they can ask to “play down” in the younger age group. The determination of whether a player can “play down” will be made by the board after considering the size and skill of the player in relation to the lower age group.

2012 Spring Soccer: 5 to 12 Year Olds

Our SPRING SOCCER program is an intramural program geared toward children, ages five to twelve years, who want to play organized soccer outside of the regular Fall Season. It is perfect for children who are new to the game, or for children who want to sharpen their skills for the Fall Season. Spring Soccer is a time for parents and children to have fun and learn the fundamentals of soccer.

Our Spring Soccer Program is broken into four groups; five and six year olds, seven and eight year olds, nine and ten year olds, eleven and twelve year olds play together.

Games are played on Sunday afternoons for all ages. Games start at 1PM, 2PM, or 3PM as scheduled. The first 15 minutes of the one-hour session is devoted to practice and warm-up, with the remainder of the time spent on the field in game format.

UMSC Awarded 2011 D’Anjolell Award

To all Volunteers, Coaches, Board Members, and Families,

It gives me great pride and pleasure to announce that UMSC has been awarded the 2011 D’Anjolell Award by the EPYSA. This award recognizes an organization’s contribution to the game and to the youth who play it. Thank you to all of our players, parents, coaches, volunteers, and board members for your effort and hard work! If it weren’t for you, this award would not be possible.

We will be presented this award on March 3^rd,at the EPYSA Awards Gala and 40^th Anniversary Celebration, held at the Crowne Plaza Philadelphia. Tickets are available to all club members for purchase through the EPYSA website. Please contact Kylea Meredith at the EPYSA office (610-238-9966) for additional details.

As we prepare to enter the 2012 soccer season, I can’t think of any better news that I can share with our club members.

2011 UMSC Volunteer of the Year Award

Each year Upper Moreland Soccer Club recognizes people who make a difference in our soccer community. The Volunteer of the Year Award honors the extraordinary accomplishments in volunteering and giving back to the game of soccer, the Upper Moreland Soccer Club and our community. There are many special soccer volunteers who put in the extra work, who line the fields and take down nets, who are there when the coaches and players need a helping hand who are deserving but this year’s honorees went above and beyond.

The Upper Moreland Soccer Club is proud to award the 2011 Volunteer(s) of the Year award to Dean Swedberg and Michelle Winter. Both Dean and Michelle have been with the Upper Moreland Soccer Club for a long time but this year, in particular, their efforts have gone above and beyond to ensure the success of the UMSC. Both were ever present in all that the club was able to accomplish in 2011.

Please join me in congratulating and thanking both Dean and Michelle for their hard work and dedication to our club, our township and most importantly our children.
